Is the Glue Safe for the Hoof Horn?

Updated on 10/13/2026

In short

Yes, the XT-40 instant glue is also used in human medicine, only acts on the surface and does not penetrate living tissue. What matters is a clean, dry hoof surface, not too much glue and complete curing before the hoof is put under load.

The XT-40 cyanoacrylate glue used is also used in human medicine and is suitable for use on the hoof. It acts only on the surface and does not penetrate living tissue. In practical use, the glue has proven reliable over many years, including with repeated use across multiple shoeing intervals.

When the glue-on horseshoe is removed, a thin layer of glue is deliberately left on the hoof. This protects the hoof horn during removal and prevents the horn from tearing.

One bottle of XT-40 usually lasts for about 4–6 applications.

Important for safe use:

  • clean, dry hoof surface
  • correct dosage (not too much glue)
  • full curing before load is applied

Improper use (e.g. a dirty or greasy hoof wall, overdosing, incomplete curing) can lead to problems with adhesion on the hoof.
