Hannes Houvenaghel is a hoof care specialist in the Eichsfeld region of Thuringia. Here he tells us in his own words how he works and why, despite his surname, he prefers gluing to nailing.\n \n\n My path to the hoof\n \n \n My name is Hannes Houvenaghel, and I'm from the Eichsfeld region in Thuringia. And even though my surname is Houvenaghel, I prefer using glue-on shoes over conventional iron shoes.\nI came to hoof care through my girlfriend: we have eight horses ourselves and couldn't find anyone who was really doing the job properly. So I said I'd just give it a try myself — and took a course. Today I do it as my main profession.\n \n\n How I work\n \n \n I mainly use glue-on shoes, especially for orthopaedic issues or other supportive measures on the horse. We're doing really well with them and have been able to help many horses — particularly in the orthopaedic area. But you can also work very well with hoof boots; the horses cope with them nicely.\n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n How I came to Goodsmith\n \n \n I came to Goodsmith back then through a client whose horse was at the clinic and could no longer be nailed — but still needed hoof protection.
